The TRUTH
About Dog Food

"Dog Food" is a very complicated topic.  This article explains the problems with today's dog food industry and the many different ways

you can make sure you are feeding your miniature schnauzer a healthy

well-balanced diet.

Vaccines

As a retired pharmacist, I have been concerned for years that are over-vaccinating our dogs. Vaccines are necessary, but with our children, we eventually stop vaccinating them after puberty. But with our pets, we continue vaccine boosters until they are well into their senior years.

Heartworm/Flea and Tick prevention

Learn about the problems associated with the newer Canine Heartworm and Flea combination medications, and what we recommend that is

safe and effective.

One Pup
vs

Two Pups

Frequently, I have people who email me they want two puppies, and preferably from the same litter. Learn why sound research has proven this is NOT a good idea.

What is a Parti?

"Parti colors" are easily described as being patterned like a Holstein cow; random spots of color on a white background. Learn about the history of the parti schnauzer, along with many examples of the many different parti colors.

To crop or not?

One of the difficult decisions for many Schnauzer owners relates to ear cropping. I see many discussions online about ear cropping, and many times these discussions can get quite heated. People seem to have very strong opinions on the topic, and so I have written my own thoughts to help owners and future puppy owners make this decision.

Eye Color Information

"The different eye colors of Miniature Schnauzers can be confusing.  This article explains the various colors found in the AKC miniature schnauzers registry; Black, Brown, Blue, Green, and Amber."

Male vs. Female

When I was growing up my parents always made us pick a female. It was not until I purchased a male that I realized the “myth” about males was wrong.  Learn the differences between males and females.

Potty Training 101

Always establish the same verbal clues during housetraining so that no matter where you are, you can give your dog the verbal clue to relieve himself.  The first step is to find an outdoor grassy space you can consistently take your puppy to when it’s potty time.

It's All About
"The Hair"

This article explains the different types of miniature schnauzer hair texture, coats, and grooming styles.  It includes a section on why miniature schnauzers are hypoallergenic.

What is Ticking?

You've probably noticed that not all white dogs have a clear white coat. When there are spots of color in it, it's called "Ticking".  Heavily ticked Parti Schnauzers will look like Bird Dogs.

How to Stop Puppy Biting!

Puppies normally learn to play with and nip their siblings from a young age. They learn their boundaries

from how their siblings and their mother react. When a puppy arrives in his new home, he may not have completely mastered those boundaries, so it is your job to teach him.

When to Spay or Neuter

When I first started breeding 18+ years ago, most veterinarians recommended you spay a female after their first or second heat cycle, which was a very conservative approach. Then the pendulum began to swing and suddenly they were spaying and neutering dogs as early as 8 weeks.  At the time, that seemed like a very bad idea to me for many reasons.

Diarrhea
Dehyration &
Heatstroke

Diarrhea in puppies can be serious & life-threatening if the puppy becomes dehydrated. Learn the three main causes of diarrhea in pups and adults, and the ways to treat it.
